Staged Environments: Steven Chan has recently published a new article about utilizing pre-patched or “staged” environments (Reducing Patching Downtimes with Staged Applications Systems). Staged Applications patching is near and dear to our hearts, as it’s the easiest way to reduce the downtime window of an upgrade (except for faster hardware…:-)). The article clearly outlines the approach to the staged environment but the point we want to make is that you should ALWAYS take advantage of this approach if you are upgrading.
Patching Considerations: To achieve additional “bang for the buck”, use admergepatch to do aggressive merging, use adpatch command-line arguments, and use the shared applications filesystem architecture. Also, watch for fixes to Rapid Install throughout your upgrade cycle. Recently, while nearing the end of a Release 12 upgrade, we discovered “one more fix” to Rapid Install - Rapid Install 12.0.4.7 Patch 6796703.
If you’ve been through an upgrade and found additional ways to simplify the process or reduce the timeline, let us know and we’ll add your ideas to the list!
